Download and Install LastPass

This post is a tutorial on downloading and installing LastPass that goes along with my post on How to Manage All Those Passwords.  This will be dry and technical, but hopefully easy to follow.  Note that all the photos are numbered and that corresponds with the steps typed above said photo.

Lets Begin.

As a favor to me, please download it using this link HERE so that I get credit for it.

Downloading:
  1. Go to the LastPass website (click the link) and click on the Downloads button.
  2. The Recommended option will almost always be correct.  If not, choose your operating system to the right and then select the download for the browser you are using
  3. Click the download button
Installing:
-Run the file you downloaded.  Note: If you get to a screen that isn't pictured, leave the default options and proceed.
  1. Make sure this is all that is checked.  It should be accurate based on which browser you use.
  2. Click Next

  1. I assume if you are looking at this post, you don't have an account.  Choose the option for not having an account to get one setup.
  2. Click Next

  1. Put in your preferred email address (you will use this when accessing your vault)
  2. Imperative: Make a strong password (I suggest above 15 characters with complexity)  Don't forget this password.  LastPass does not store it, one reason it is so secure, and therefore cannot reset it or issue it to you.  Do not keep this password in a file on the computer or written down.  This will be one of the few passwords you will need to remember, so just memorize it.
  3. Make sure this bar is green and full, if not, make the password longer, and more complex (caps, numbers, symbols, etc)
  4. Click all boxes
  5. Click Next

  1. Don't choose yes to this, it isn't worth the trouble.

  1. Choose the option to keep you logged in (if this is your computer, if shared, probably no)
  2. Choose Done

Getting it Working:
  1. Open up the web browser you installed LastPass for. Click on the LastPass icon that is now in your browser.  It will ask you to login to your new account
  2. The email you registered with
  3. Insert your strong and complex password that would make me proud.
  4. Click Login (the LastPass icon you clicked to login should go red instead of grey.  This is how you know you are logged in)
  1. Go to a website that you normally use and requires you to login.  Login like you normally would.

  1. It will log you in as normal, but you should notice a green (blue on safari and chrome)
  2. Not sure why I skipped one, but it is late and I am not redoing this screenshot. Click the Save Site option to add this site to your password vault.

  1. Give it a memorable name, usually the name of the site or service you are accessing
  2. If you want to organize by group, add a group name. (I put mine in work or personal)
  3. Click Save Site.

  1. If you logout of the site and go back to the login page, you will see that it auto-populated the login info.  All you have to do is click the Sign In button and you are good.  Never had to type the password.  Repeat this process for all the sites you use.  After a while, you will have them all in your vault and not need to remember them all anymore.  No need to write them down or save them in a file.

Why Isn't It Working?

-Make sure that your browser plugin is logged in.  It should be red and not gray.  If it is not red, click on it and login.
